Sept 21, 2009: Record Number of Whales Sighted on Farallon Islands Trip

A record number of whales were sighted on the Oceanic Society's whale watching cruises to the Farallon Islands this past weekend. A total of 114 whales were spotted from the Oceanic Society's educational whale watching boats, including 94 endangered humpback whales, 13 endangered blue whales and 7 Orcas, or killer whales. Izzy Szczepaniak, a naturalist for the Oceanic Society and field researcher for Cascadia Research Collective, reviewed records covering the last twenty one years in order to make the determination.

Oceanic Society Celebrates 100-year Anniversary Of the Farallon National Wildlife Refuge

San Francisco, CA - May 29, 2009 This year, the Oceanic Society's 25th season of educational whale watching cruises to the Farallon Islands is underway at an historic time-2009 represents the 100th anniversary of the creation of the Farallon National Wildlife Refuge. To honor this anniversary, the Oceanic Society is enhancing its whale watching trips to the Farallon Islands in several ways.

SAN FRANCISCO - World-renowned marine scientist and deep-sea dive record-holder Dr. Sylvia Earle will lead an Oceanic Society expedition to Blackbird Caye, Turneffe Atoll, Belize, to foster public awareness regarding the importance of marine protected areas and to discuss potential solutions for preserving oceanic biodiversity. Worldwide oceans face increasing threats from higher water temperatures, rising sea levels, overfishing and escalating ocean acidity. Yet, there is reason for hope.

Endangered Blue Whales seen on Oceanic Society’s Farallon Islands Nature Cruise

Two blue whales, the largest animals ever to inhabit the earth, were seen feeding near the Farallon Islands to the wonderment of the whale watchers participating in the June 21st Oceanic Society's Farallon Islands Nature Cruise. Blue whales are endangered and have still not recovered their world-wide population numbers despite a moratorium on commercial hunting of all large whales since 1986.

Oceanic Society Embarks on 24th Season of Farallon Islands Educational Whale Watching Cruises

San Francisco, CA. - May 14, 2008. The Oceanic Society announces the start of the 24th season of Farallon Island Educational Whale Watching Cruises. The Sanctuary is host to Blue and Humpback Whales, Dolphins, and sustains Seals, and Hundredss of Thousands of Seabirds.
