Farallon Islands: Past, Present and Future
In Cooperation with the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service, the Oceanic Society has produced a film, Farallon Islands Past, Present and Future, to raise public awareness and foster a conservation ethic about the Farallon Islands National Wildlife Refuge.. Produced as a DVD to allow widespread distribution, it emphasizes the importance of continued protection of this important and sensitive habitat.
The film offers a ‘behind the scenes' look at the Farallones, placing them in the context of ongoing conservation, restoration and threats. The production also links the various terrestrial and marine ecosystem dynamics in an integrated manner. It highlights the important work of the Point Reyes Bird Observatory and the U.S. Fish & Wildlife Service at the Farallones. The goal is to showcase the spectacular wildlife on the islands, provide insight into the road to recovery in order to build public awareness and instill personal responsibility.
The film covers the following topics: origins and geography, geology, marine ecosystem, wildlife species and their seasons, human history, impacts and threats, research, restoration and management, protective legislation and guidelines, and public access and involvement.
The DVD is available to the general public through various outlets such as visitor centers and the web, and shas been ubmitted to film festivals and potentially will be integrated into a broadcast film.
