OS - August 12, 2008: Farallon Islands DVD to be produced with US Fish & Wildlife Service

Farallon Islands DVDIn Cooperation with the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service, the Oceanic Society is producing a film, Farallon Islands Past, Present and Future, to raise public awareness and foster a conservation ethic about the Farallon Islands National Wildlife Refuge.. Produced as a DVD to allow widespread distribution, it will emphasize the importance of continued protection of this important and sensitive habitat.

The film will offer a ‘behind the scenes' look at the Farallones, placing them in the context of ongoing conservation, restoration and threats. The production will also link the various terrestrial and marine ecosystem dynamics in an integrated manner. It will also highlight the important work of the Point Reyes Bird Observatory and the U.S. Fish & Wildlife Service at the Farallones. The goal is to showcase the spectacular wildlife on the islands, provide insight into the road to recovery in order to build public awareness and instill personal responsibility. 

The film will cover the following topics: origins and geography, geology, marine ecosystem, wildlife species and their seasons, human history, impacts and threats, research, restoration and management, protective legislation and guidelines, and public access and involvement.

The DVD will be made available to the general public through various outlets such as visitor centers and the web, and submitted to film festivals and potentially be integrated into a broadcast film.

The DVD will be available for distribution by 3 November 2008.
