Natural History
The Pantanal wetlands, rivers and savannas are among the richest ecosystems on earth. A total of 650 species of birds occur in the Pantanal, 82 species of which weigh more than a pound---by far more species of large birds than anywhere else in the world. The world’s largest Jaguars (weighing in at over 300 pounds) are found in still good abundance, as are Giant Anteaters, Capuchin monkeys, the120-pound Capybaras, and the Brazilian Tapir. Traveling in the company of giant otter and macaw experts during this 9-day expedition, our group will have exceptional opportunities to view giant otter family groups and to observe the world’s largest parrot (the majestic, cobalt-blue Hyacinth Macaw). In the company of local naturalists, we will also have wonderful opportunities to see other wildlife in the Pantanal because, unlike the dense Amazon rainforest, the Pantanal is quite open, making it easier to spot the enormous numbers of large water birds as well as mammals. We will be visiting the northern Pantanal and will be headquartered at a comfortable lodge on the Pixaim River. Accommodations are in double occupancy rooms with private baths, and wildlife excursions are by private van and small motorized open riverboats. Our itinerary includes daily visits to observe and photograph giant otters, excursions to view Hyacinth macaws and other birds and mammals, and a full day will be dedicated to visiting one of the best sites in the world to observe jaguars.
