Belize Whale Sharks (snorkeling/scuba)

For snorkelers and scuba diversThis program introduces participants to whale sharks, the gentle giants of the sea. In the company of an Oceanic Society naturalist, we will search for whale sharks that congregate off Belize's coast annually to feed on fish spawn (masses of fish eggs.) While the dedicated focus of this land-based expedition will be whale sharks, daily activities will include snorkeling from uninhabited islands, and diving along coral reefs. Whale sharks are generally found within 20 feet of water surface, and we will observe them from the water's surface snorkeling. Generally considered docile and harmless, they filter feed on plankton and small fish, as do the great whales. Observing these giants underwater is likely to be a once-in-a-lifetime experience. Gladden Spit Marine Reserve off Placencia was established specifically to protect whale sharks. While snorkelers and divers are allowed the observe the feeding whale sharks, only a few boats with permits are allowed to enter the Reserve. The key to a successful and enjoyable whaleshark trip is the quality of the boat and personnel. Our 43-foot private charter boat is fully permitted and offers plenty of storage space, a canopy top, mini-bathroom and sturdy swim ladder. This trip benefits from experienced dive master/guide Glen Eiley, former board member of Friends of Nature, the local organization that co-manages the Gladden Spit and Silk Cayes Marine Reserves. Proper protocols will be followed to ensure that our activities do not negatively impact the whale sharks. When not searching for and observing whale sharks at Gladden Spit Marine Reserve, we will visit Laughing Bird and Silk Caye Marine Reserves. Scuba divers will explore the ringing reefs inside the arrier reef. Snorkerlers can enjoy neaby guided beach snorkeling from one of the many coral-ringed uninhabited islands. The warm shallow waters of the reef permit snorkelers easy access to an extraordinary underwater paradise. Along the outer barrier reef, we should see brilliant sponges, rich corals, and colorful tropical fish. One morning, we will take a break from our water activities and visit the nearby lagoon and tropical jungle to search for manatees, howler monkeys, and enjoy a nature walk in the tropical forest. Scuba divers can expect five days of diving at 2 dives per day, including the whale shark site. Only advanced divers should register for diving. This adventure is for the hardy individual, experienced with open ocean snorkeling. Boat trips to the whale shark site are one and a half hours in duration. The site is outside the barrier reef in the deep open ocean. During our whale shark expedition, we stay in a beachfront lodge offering double occupancy rooms with private bath. Accommodations are basic but comfortable, offering hot water showers, air conditioning and 24-hour electricity. Limited singles are available. |
