About This Trip
This four-day extension explores North Sulawesi, an island whose sprawling, star-shaped coastline stretches over 6,000 kilometers along some of the richest waters in the Coral Triangle. Days are spent snorkeling in Bunaken National Park, established in 1991 as one of Indonesia's first protected marine reserves. The park's reefs draw currents of nutrient-rich water up from the ocean depths, producing a dense mix of macro life, soft and hard corals, and schools of fish, all within a marine environment shared with an estimated 35,000 residents living inside the park's boundaries.
Inland, a visit to Tangkoko Nature Reserve shifts the focus from reef to rainforest. Set on the slopes of Mount Tangkoko, the reserve is home to an unusually high concentration of endemic species, including the crested black macaque and over 100 recorded bird species, among them the red-knobbed hornbill.

Itinerary
Sample Itinerary
Disembark the vessel in Sorong and fly from Sorong to Manado. On arrival, drive approximately 30 minutes to Cocotinos Lodge. The rest of the afternoon is free to relax by the pool or explore the local village.
After breakfast, depart for full-day snorkeling excursions at Bunaken National Marine Park aboard a privately chartered boat, with box lunches served on board. Return to the resort in the early afternoon for dinner and a relaxing evening.
Watch for green sea turtles, which maintain a large resident population in the park’s waters, along with reef sharks, dolphins, and, on rarer occasions, dugongs and pilot whales. Explore dramatic coral walls and reef systems that support clownfish, Napoleon wrasse, and manta rays among the park’s dive and snorkel sites.
Rise early and drive to Tangkoko Nature Reserve to look for residents such as the red-knobbed hornbill, tarsier, and the endemic crested black macaque. Return to the resort in the afternoon. Travelers who prefer not to join the Tangkoko excursion can arrange snorkeling or diving with the resort for an added cost.
