Event Details
Meeting Point:
We'll meet outside 1396 La Playa St (in front of Java Beach Cafe), where an Oceanic Society team member will be there to greet you and point you in the right direction. Look out for our event signs as well — there is a large sand dune between the cafe and the beach so follow the signs to find us easily!
Once everyone is gathered, we'll give a briefing for the day and distribute gear. Waste will be weighed at the end of the event and properly disposed of with support from Recology.
Getting there:
By public transit: Take the N (Judah) Muni line all the way to the end — Ocean Beach is the last stop. Cross the Great Highway and you're at the beach. The stop at Judah/La Playa/Ocean Beach near Java Cafe is just a 5 minute walk from our meeting point.
By car: Street parking is available along the Great Highway and neighboring streets including La Playa Street and Judah Street. Parking in the area is free — just note that weekends can be particularly busy so arrive a little early if you can.
What to bring:
We will provide all collection materials but the following is recommended to bring:
- Thick garden or work gloves
- Sunglasses, hat, and sunscreen
- Layers and close-toed shoes
- Drinks and snacks in reusable containers
- Your own bucket or reusable bag if you have one
📸 Please note: A photographer will be present at the event. If you prefer not to be photographed, please reach out to mosher@oceanicsociety.org in advance.
📲 Share the love! Tag @oceanic.society and use #GlobalOceanCleanup during the event — every post, share, and comment amplifies the important work you're doing and supports the fight against plastic pollution.
About Oceanic Society Community Events
Beach cleanups may seem modest, but their impact is significant. A California study found that over 70% of residents consider beach and water quality crucial when deciding to visit. Research in Orange County shows that a 25% reduction in beach debris could generate over $29.5 million in cost savings. Beyond economics, cleanups provide valuable data that informs policy, while clean beaches inspire ocean stewardship and support local tourism.
Come ready to get your hands dirty — see you on the beach!
About the Global Ocean Cleanup
Each year, Oceanic Society organizes the Global Ocean Cleanup between World Ocean Day and Sea Turtle Week (June 8-16). This campaign brings together coastal organizations worldwide to lead community cleanups and create art pieces from collected waste for a friendly competition among participants.
Now in our 5th year, the campaign has engaged 7,725+ volunteers, collected 133+ tons of trash, supported 170+ cleanups across 40 countries, and reached 22.5 million people with science-based storytelling, and channeled more than $83,000 to community organizations worldwide.
