About This Trip

Trade the reef for the rainforest on this four-day Belize inland extension, a natural complement to the underwater world you've already explored on Turneffe Atoll. Based at Crystal Paradise Resort in the Cayo District, you'll spend your days moving between two very different chapters of Belize's story: the tropical wilderness of the Macal River and the ancient civilization that once thrived beneath its canopy. Canoeing past nesting birds and sunning iguanas sets an unhurried pace before the trip's centerpiece, a choice between two of Belize's most significant archaeological experiences. Adventurous travelers can wade through the crystal-clear water and stone passages of the Actun Tunichil Muknal cave to view Maya pottery and skeletal remains left undisturbed for centuries, while those seeking a more traditional (but still active) day can hike the excavated temples of Caracol, once the largest city in the Maya world.

The extension continues into Guatemala for a guided day at Tikal, where soaring temple pyramids rise above the jungle canopy in one of Central America's premier archaeological reserves, before wrapping up with a visit to the Belize Zoo and its collection of native wildlife. Throughout, you'll stay in cabanas with private baths, ceiling fans, and hammock-strung porches, and eat home-cooked meals drawn from local ingredients. It's a grounded way to deepen your understanding of Belize beyond the coastline, pairing the country's marine biodiversity with its cultural and terrestrial heritage.

Please note: This expedition can only be booked as an add-on to our Belize Snorkeling & Coral Reef Ecology expedition.

Itinerary

Sample Itinerary

Transfer from Belize City or the airport to Crystal Paradise Resort in time for lunch, then spend the afternoon on a memorable, easy canoe down the Macal River, one of Belize’s cleanest waterways. The tree-lined shoreline is prime habitat for tropical birds, butterflies, and iguanas.

Choose your adventure. The ATM Cave tour (recommended for physically fit travelers) involves a short swim at the entrance, a few hours of wading through waist-deep water, and a climb to a 350-meter main chamber lined with Maya pottery, human remains, and striking stalactite formations. Helmets and headlamps are provided. Alternatively, tour Caracol, Belize’s largest Maya center, where a network of ancient roadways and terraced fields hints at the scale of the civilization that once farmed this land.

Cross the border into Guatemala for a full day guided tour of Tikal, a UNESCO World Heritage Site and one of the world’s premier archaeological reserves. Set within more than 225 square kilometers of jungle, Tikal’s soaring temple complexes are among the most iconic in the Maya world. Bring your passport, comfortable shoes, and sun protection.

After breakfast, visit the Belize Zoo to see native wildlife up close before transferring to the airport in Belize City for departure.

Accommodations

You'll stay at Crystal Paradise Resort, owned and hand-built by the Belizean Tut family using the traditional art of palm-thatched roofing. Cabanas come with a queen and a twin bed, ceiling fan, air conditioning, wifi, private bath with hot shower, and a porch with hammock, a comfortable base for exploring the surrounding jungle. Meals are home-cooked and feature local dishes, vegetables, and seasonal fruit, with special dietary needs accommodated with advance notice.
