About This Trip

This expedition immerses travelers in two of Brazil’s most spectacular natural regions, beginning in the Pantanal, the world’s largest tropical wetland and one of South America’s premier wildlife destinations. Daily excursions by boat, safari jeep, and on foot provide exceptional opportunities for wildlife spotting in the Pantanal, as well as encounters with giant river otters, capybaras, caimans, giant anteater and a stunning array of birdlife, all within a landscape shaped by seasonal flooding and rich ecological complexity.

The journey continues in Bonito, a region famed for its crystal-clear rivers created by limestone geology that naturally filters the water. Here, travelers enjoy gentle freshwater snorkeling experiences in some of Brazil’s clearest rivers, revealing thriving fish communities and lush underwater scenery, along with guided walks in protected natural areas. Led by expert naturalists, this small-group Brazil wildlife expedition blends immersive nature experiences with conservation-focused travel into a seamless and unforgettable journey.

Itinerary

Sample Itinerary

Arrive in Campo Grande and transfer to the Hotel Deville Prime Campo Grande. The remainder of the day is at leisure to rest after travel and prepare for the expedition ahead.

*Note that the daily order of tours may vary according to local conditions.

Travel by 4WD vehicle from Campo Grande into the Southern Pantanal, enjoying scenic landscapes and wildlife sightings along the way. Arrive at Baía das Pedras Pantanal Lodge, a family-owned ranch in the heart of the wetlands, and take an introductory walk to explore the surrounding grasslands and lagoons.

Begin the day with a beautiful sunrise and breakfast. Our tours will be carried out early morning and late afternoon, to avoid the hottest times of the day. After breakfast, we will set out through the flooded plains and across the dry grasslands, exploring the region like the local “Pantaneiros” do. As we do, we’ll keep our eyes peeled for wildlife. We’ll return to the farm mid-morning for lunch, relaxation, and exploring the grounds in search of the large resident blue macaw population.

In the late afternoon, we’ll set out in a 4WD with a local Pantaneiro to explore the property for wildlife. We’ll drive through flooded areas and native Pantanal vegetation (season-dependent), hoping to spot animals like anteaters, capybara, deer, caiman, tapir, fox, peccary, macaws, toucans, and the iconic jabiru stork. After dark, we’ll return for a night safari to look for nocturnal species.

We’ll start early with breakfast and head out on another 4WD land safari to explore a different area of the property. We’ll return mid-morning for free time before lunch.

In the afternoon, we’ll switch to the water with a canoe trip led by a local Pantaneiro, so your hands stay free for photos. We’ll paddle through calm waterways, spotting birds, capybaras, caimans, and mirrored forest reflections.

The tour ends at sunset with a relaxing tereré experience—ice-cold water, yerba mate, and local conversation—where time slows down and we learn more about the Pantanal cowboys.

After breakfast, we depart Baía das Pedras and travel deeper into the Pantanal by 4WD through remote ranchlands to Barra Mansa Pantanal Lodge on the Rio Negro. The drive takes about 4–5 hours through scenic Pantanal farms, with wildlife viewing opportunities along the way. Settle in and begin exploring a new river-based ecosystem known for its rich biodiversity and wildlife viewing. Jaguars are frequently seen along the Rio Negro banks near the lodge, thanks to the river’s abundant wildlife habitat.

Over the next two days, activities at Barra Mansa will be chosen by guides based on local conditions and may include boat trips, canoeing, jeep safaris, horseback riding, walking tours, birdwatching, and ranching experiences. Boat and canoe trips offer excellent wildlife viewing, with chances to see giant otters, kingfishers, caimans, and more. Walking safarisand jeep safaris provide access to varied habitats and great sunset wildlife viewing. Birdwatching is exceptional here, with over 250 species, including hyacinth macaws and jabirus. As a working ranch, Barra Mansa also offers hands-on cultural activities like cattle rounding, roping, milking, and learning to make cheese and doce de leite.

Departure back to Bonito on a scenic private flight. The approximate flight time is 50 minutes. Upon arrival, the afternoon and evening are yours to enjoy at leisure. Explore the charming town of Bonito, browse local artisan shops, choose from a variety of restaurants, or simply relax and people-watch in the main square. Evening at leisure. Accommodation at Hotel Pousada Águas de Bonito.

Rio da Prata is one of Bonito’s most famous attractions. The day begins with a walk through the forest near the Olho d’Água and Prata rivers, passing century-old trees and wildlife. At the source of the Olho d’Água River, our guide will help everyone equip themselves with wetsuits, masks, snorkels, and practice flotation to explore the surroundings and become comfortable with the gear. We’ll then drift along the clear river for about 2 km, observing fish and aquatic plants, ending where the Olho d’Água meets the Prata River. After the tour, a typical Mato Grosso do Sul lunch is served.

After breakfast, we’ll transfer to Bonito’s Blue Lagoon Cave. The tour begins with a 300-meter walk to the cave entrance, followed by stairs down to the stunning electric-blue lagoon. The cave’s geological formations and the lagoon view are truly remarkable.

After the morning tour, we’ll head to Estância Mimosa on the banks of the Rio Mimoso. Upon arrival, a delicious lunch will be served. In the afternoon, we’ll enjoy a guided walk through gallery forests, stopping at waterfalls, cascades, and natural pools for swimming and relaxation. We’ll return to Bonito in the evening for leisure time.

After breakfast, enjoy time for a final nature experience (depending on flight schedules) before transferring to the airport in Campo Grande (3h30min drive) for your flight home.
