We are excited to report that Turneffe Atoll, Belize was declared a marine reserve on November 22, 2012 by by Hon. Lisel Alamilla, Belize’s Minister of Forestry, Fisheries, and Sustainable Development. The announcement comes after decades of work by numerous partners, including Oceanic Society. Learn more about Turneffe Atoll Marine Reserve here.

We look forward to working together with our partners in Belize and with the Belizean government to ensure effective implementation of the reserve over the coming years.

Brian Hutchinson

Brian Hutchinson is Oceanic Society's co-CEO, co-founder of the State of the World's Sea Turtles Program, and program officer of the IUCN-SSC Marine Turtle Specialist Group. Brian holds a B.A. in zoology from Connecticut College, and has been working to advance global marine conservation for more than 20 years. Brian is an avid traveler who has visited more than 45 countries and led Oceanic Society expeditions in Costa Rica, Cuba, Baja California, Indonesia, and Trinidad.
