We are pleased to share a new film released today by filmmaker Sam Potter that features the unique travel experiences offered by Oceanic Society and our partners in Belize. In the film, Sam joins Oceanic Society president and CEO Roderic Mast on an adventure to Belize to participate in sea turtle research with our partners at the nonprofit organization ECOMAR, and to scuba dive at the world famous Great Blue Hole.
The adventure begins with a visit to St. George’s Caye, where ECOMAR leads a range of research programs that aim to study and protect sea turtles, manatees, coral reefs, and more. Sam enjoys the chance to participate in hands-on sea turtle research alongside Belizean and international sea turtle experts. Though ultimately unsuccessful in their efforts to tag a sea turtle, the group discusses the value of such research efforts in understanding sea turtle habitat use and behavior for conservation.
Next, they travel to Turneffe Atoll for a chance to scuba dive at the Great Blue Hole, an experience on Sam’s bucket list since childhood. First made famous in 1971 by Jacques Cousteau, the Great Blue Hole is a massive underwater sinkhole filled with marine life, including sharks, corals, and a wide range of fish.
